“Why Some Calories Are ‘Worth It’ and Others Aren’t”

One sunny afternoon, Emily was at a picnic with her friends, and there were two choices for dessert: a piece of fruit salad and a sugary donut. Emily loved donuts but had learned that some foods were “worth it” and others weren’t. “What does that mean?” she wondered. Her mom explained, “Some foods give you more than just calories—they give you vitamins and energy, like fruit salad! Donuts have calories but not much else, so they’re not as ‘worth it’ if you want to feel good after eating.” Emily thought about this. She loved the sweet fruit salad, and even though the donut looked tempting, she knew the fruit would give her more energy and make her feel good. Emily took a big scoop of fruit salad and felt happy and strong. “This was totally worth it!” she thought. She understood that while some treats, like donuts, could be fun occasionally, foods that were packed with nutrients were worth it because they made her feel great. Emily learned to make choices that not only satisfied her cravings but also helped her stay healthy and energetic. It felt good to eat foods that were truly worth it!
