Understanding the Role of Genetics in Fitness Progress

Jack had always wondered why his friend Ben seemed to get stronger so much faster than him. “I work just as hard, but Ben lifts more and recovers quicker,” Jack thought. His coach noticed this and sat down with Jack. “Jack, sometimes progress is a little different for everyone, and genetics play a part,” the coach explained. “Genetics can affect how your body responds to exercise, like how quickly you build muscle or how much strength you gain.” Jack was surprised but also relieved. The coach told him that even though Ben might have a natural advantage, it didn’t mean Jack couldn’t still make amazing progress. Everyone’s body is unique, and Jack could still achieve his fitness goals by focusing on what works for him, like training smart and being consistent. Jack learned that genetics are just one piece of the puzzle, and the hard work he put into his training would still lead to progress—just at his own pace. He felt proud of his journey and excited to see how far his effort could take him.
